The Bose SoundTouch 20 speaker which is wifi-enabled and compatible with Bluetooth, is a direct competitor of the Sonos systems. It features a remote to control it right out of the box.
In this review, we go through the packaging of the Bose SoundTouch 20 speaker. The speaker has buttons on top for adjusting volume and input. We see cables such as a micro USB and US power cable in the box too.
At the back of the speaker, we find IO. Power input, ethernet port, USB and Micro-USB ports for setting up if you don’t want to use an iOS or Android app, and lastly an auxiliary input for devices that don’t have Bluetooth or Wifi capability. Setup took approximately 10 minutes with the iOS app. Compatible with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, check out JBL Pulse 2 Black Friday Deals
The set up process wasn’t as smooth as some might hope, but if you follow the instructions, then its not something to worry about. Now to start with the part I would have loved to see improved. Though intuitive and simple to use, the selection of music sources compatible with the SoundTouch is limited.
Apple Music does not have a setting for disabling vocals on their service, so I had to rely on Spotify and subscribe to the paid version. Opted to listen to internet radio instead. This is a corner where Sonos shines with its much more expansive library of supported music providers; Bose needs to catch up. However, Bose’s app is far less cluttered and provides a more extensive range of flexibility when it comes to how you want to play your music.
One really handy touch the SoundTouch 20 has is an actual power button to turn it on or off. you can also use the quick controller on the side of it to switch between wifi, Bluetooth or aux playback, Sonos does not have this feature either but they compensate by turning themselves off automatically. And as a bonus there is a long-push Another benefit to the Bose system is that it isn’t tied solely to your phone.
The remote control included with the soundtouch 20, being able to change inputs, creating customized presets and pause/play button work over wifi and Bluetooth. The remote also has thumbs up and down, but they only work with Pandora in the UK so it is safe to ignore them. The buttons are a little mushy and inconsistent, which can be frustrating when you’re trying to find something that’s slightly off balance.
Why pick Bose SoundTouch 20 on Black Friday?
This is a speaker, and the sound quality is great. However, if you want it to produce crisp trebles instead of deep basses, you will have to go into the app settings because there isn’t an option for adjusting treble on this device. You can’t tinker with any other sound settings.
I may be in the minority, but I would prefer a flatter sound. Listening to classical music on these speakers makes me feel like something is missing. Switching to Bluetooth and listening to something more bass-heavy sounds great, even at the half volume that Bose forces each punch of the bass drum home.
I am always looking for a good sound system where I can have lots of music. There was distortion from the speakers when playing at full volume, but I doubt it’s ever needed. I found it a little uncomfortable to sit close by the speaker. My summary of the SoundTouch 20 is that it’s a good quality product that I wouldn’t expect less from Bose, and I would have liked a flatter sound signature. Users looking for thumping bass might not find SoundTouch 20 to be ideal, but they’re willing to let you adjust the setting in case it’s just what you need.
The only complaint I have is that they are not a one-size-fit all solution. Other than that, the speaker does everything you want it to do!
